Bill's Legacy / Everything is Better

Recently I called to follow-up with my client Bill, a businessman in Seattle to drop off several pairs of pants that I had taken to alterations.

Much to my surprise, his wife answered his phone, seconds later to find out that he had passed away the weekend prior.

Immediately I was struck with a deep sadness of how I would miss Bill. Bill always brought a smile to my face and I was thrilled when we had the opportunity to work together.

His wife shared that up until his last doctor appointment, looking put-together and polished was important to Bill. We both giggled knowing that was a high value of Bill's.

Bill was an architect who knew beauty when he saw it. He understood quality. He understood lines and design. There was always wonderful conversation as we talked about the correlation between clothing and his love for architecture.

During our last conversation Bill and I talked about the importance of his image and why it still mattered to him.

Bill told me, "everything is better", when I'm polished and put-together.

He felt at his best when meeting and talking with people. He could forget about what he's wearing and attend to the conversation vs. feeling self-conscious that something wasn't quite right with his appearance.

He expressed that when giving a presentation it ALWAYS felt better when he was intentional with his dress, allowing him to speak with a more confident presence.

Bill had a strong awareness of presence, the presentation of self.

A mindshift. Did you know your personal appearance is the first filter to Executive Presence?

Executive Presence: no man or woman attains a top job, lands an extraordinary deal or develops a significant following without this heady combination of confidence, poise and authenticity that convinces the rest of us we're in the presence of someone who is the real deal. ~ Sylvia Ann Hewlett

Did I mention; Bill was still involved with his work and community until his last days at the age of 88 years old. He was a pillar of discipline, commitment and making a difference in society. Loved that man! He will be missed!

Bill's image was a statement of respect - respect for his colleagues and clients, respect for himself.

The greatest part of all, developing your personal presence can be learned and improved

Navigating the World of Personal Style

Style Confidence. Do You Have It?

Do you ever feel like finding your personal style is somewhat of a mystery? You take a style quiz and it tells you, you are classy chic, modern elegant, or boho?

So now you go looking for clothing pieces to match the "style quiz." You go into the dressing room with a handful of dresses trying to find what looks like "classy chic."

What you discover is the style doesn't fit your body type.

You're not sure about the color.

Then you catch a glimpse of a dress that's really fantastic, you love it but it's not really classy chic. Confused?

Wondering how to navigate the world of Personal Style?

Recently I was browsing YouTube to see what the "YouTube style experts" had to say on the subject of finding personal style. It was suggested that I go into my closet and see what I have "a lot of". Meaning I feel super comfortable in that style. Conclusion: that is my personal style.

REALLY...is that all I have to do? If it was that simple then why are so many women feeling frustrated with their wardrobe.

In a survey I conducted a few months ago asking, "what are your biggest style challenges?"

Women told me...

Sick and tired of feeling frumpy. What styles are right for my body type? Help me to understand what styles compliment my body type.

How do I dress appropriately for the next level in business? How do I communicate who I am? I want to look credible.

I have too many clothes. Where do I shop? How do I begin building a wardrobe.

What I know and believe: Style Confidence begins with the woman and NOT the clothes.

You're wondering, "Where do I start?"

First it begins with you. Who are you?

Second, I believe your clothing represents what you want to say without needing to say it.

We are multi-faceted women.

If you're like me, I love to express myself in different ways on different days. I love wearing a multitude of colors and styles.

Questions to Ponder:

1.Who am I? What do you value? If you could pick one word to describe you, what would it be?

2.How do you want to be perceived?

3. What do you want others to know about you?

4.What do you want to attract into your life?

5.What is your body type?

6.What is your natural coloring?

Why are all these questions important?

The essence of Personal Style begins with you. What you choose to wear everyday tells me a little about you.

I BELIEVE that Style Confidence begins with the woman and NOT the clothes.

Why does it matter? You feel comfortable in your own skin. You're authentic.

Your clothing is there to support your dreams and goals. Not just another pretty dress.

When you have a Style Confidence Plan; dressing, shopping, mixing and matching and choosing colors becomes effortless.

Are YOU Using Style as a Strategic Business Tool?

We've all heard the phrase Dress for Success. And many of us think of it as old school. As much as we want to say the phrase Dress for Success is not relevant, your clothing is telling a story.

Your clothes don't define your character. Your clothes don't ultimately define YOU.

However...Your clothes narrate a story. A story about who you are. Your clothes almost always define who you are whether that is impressive, indifferent, or lacking.

When I met Hannah a year ago, Hannah knew she needed help with her clothing style as she stepped into her new role as an entrepreneur. Business professionals hire Hannah to coach them on how to stand out amongst others to earn more recognition, opportunities, and financial compensation. www.solutionsforimpact.com

"My challenge is finding attire that is simple, yet has style and reflects who I am – I know the value I offer intellectually and also want to feel like my clothes represent me so I “show up” as the best version of myself in every way." Hannah Pelley

Dressing Intentionally or I like to say, "utilizing your image as a strategic business tool" is an aspect many business owners may not think about.

Hannah Pelley invested in her style message. It is authentic and represents www.solutionsforimpact. Every time I see Hannah she makes me smile with her elevated style confidence.

As you can see in the picture not only did she elevate her personal style but it influenced her non-verbal style - posture and self-confidence.

Is it time for you to Up-Level Your Personal Image?

Style vs. Salary: Does Your Appearance Impact Your Career

I just read an article published by payscale.com.

Does Your Appearance Impact Your Career?

The data says yes.

Payscale surveyed 34,000 employees in November 2016-January 2017 and asked “Which of the following best describes your company dress code?”

  • Business formal (tie + jacket for men, pant- or skirt-suits for women)
  • We have specific work uniforms
  • Casual (The Zuckerberg – anything goes within reason)
  • Business casual (no jeans, sneakers, flip flops, etc.)

They found that if you want to make the big bucks you're likely dressing up a bit more for work - relating to the financial or insurance industry.

Companies that have a "business formal dress code" have the highest median salary. (the survey included financial and insurance industry)

Business casual dress had the 2nd highest median salary.

When broken down by the income-level of workers, they found that a business casual dress code dominated every level of income and across a multitude of industries.

EASP17034_a.jpg

TIP! Adding the orange and poke-a-dot skirt just gave the look a little more playfulness and less formal.

I remember being taught years ago that even though you work from home, you should still dress up like you're going into the office. Why, it effects your frame of mind.

Possibly more confident while talking on the phone with clients?

EASP17046_a.jpg

I love the subject of confidence.

You may have had an experience when you "nailed" "your style" whether it was for work or maybe a date night.

You know how you felt.

How others reacted to you.

The compliments you received.

And how it made you feel.

Over the top C-O-N-F-I-D-E-N-T...am I right?

Bottom line: I believe you need to walk out the door each morning feeling CONFIDENT in your dress so you can forget about what you're wearing and do what you do best.

TIP! Are you consciously using your clothing and grooming, especially when dressed down, as valuable business assets and high-powered tools to propel you toward greater success?
